Dear Editor, In June, the New York Times reported that the Japanese government tried to block a report from the European Union, which it had itself commissioned. This report indicates that there is a moderate risk that some portion of the population will be infected with Mad Cow disease as a result of the import of feed and/or cattle from infected sources. Despite this, I have seen next-to-nothing on this issue and cannot understand why. Surely, you are free as an independent organization in a democractic country to publicize this news. I am sure many readers who have read the reports coming out of Europe wonder why a major Japanese media outlet does not consider the issue newsworthy. Further, should Japan experience an outbreak of Mad Cow disease, the fact that you have not reported on the issue in any detail would be grounds for judging you derelict in your responsibilities. This could open the way for legal action aimed at determining if you knowingly acted to suppress the news and therefore are a party to any epidemic that might ensue. I look forward to your clarification of the issue, and particularly hope you will take steps to inform the public at once about this important news story.
